If you add the $180 wireless subwoofer into the package, that's $560. Wireless surround-sound systems can cost up to $1,000, so $380 is not unreasonable, but it's still an awful lot of money for a relatively subtle audio boost. The soundbar costs $180 the speakers cost $200. It's not an absolute necessity - even for hard-core videophiles - but if you've always wanted a surround-sound setup and already own some Roku kit, it's not a bad way to go, either. I was impressed with the Roku wireless surround-sound's ease of setup, and I was pleased with its performance. I especially liked listening to Baroque compositions in this mode, as it felt like being in a concert hall. By pressing the options button on the remote, you can set the surround-sound options to "Movies & TV," "Music" or "Off." On the Music setting, the testing lab filled up with rich vocals and subtle instrumentals, regardless of genre. My experience listening to music was much different, however. The speakers gave a bit of dimension and directionality to the soundscape, but didn't really enhance the overall quality of the experience. However, once I turned the surround sound off and rewatched the same scenes, I found that the bulk of the sound was still coming from the Roku Smart Soundbar. Likewise, every comic book sound effect in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse crackled and reverberated, to say nothing of the catchy music and spirited dialogue. Watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I was impressed by how immersive the background noises were, whether they were gunshots from a tense firefight or simply the night wind during an outdoor dialogue scene. Most recent TV shows and movies have 5.1 surround sound available, and you don't need to take any extra steps to activate it. With that configuration in mind, I can say that the sound for movies and TV was decent, and the sound for music was quite good - better than expected, in fact. I also had a stool instead of a couch, and a single, large table for both speakers, rather than two end tables. I did my testing in a video lab in the Tom's Guide office, which meant that the room was windowless, thinly carpeted and somewhat full of furniture. Everyone's living space is different, which also means that everyone's acoustics are different. (Image credit: Roku) Roku wireless surround sound qualityĪs far as the surround sound itself, that's always a little harder to gauge. Once this process is done, your living room has wireless surround sound. It will also transmit any necessary firmware updates. The Roku Smart Soundbar will search for the speakers by proximity (you don't need to connect them to Wi-Fi, in other words), then pair them automatically. (Adding the subwoofer is a separate process, but you go through the same set of steps.) Then, you hold down the Home button on the remote for 5 seconds and select the option for adding speakers. The Roku Smart Soundbar automatically searches for updates when it's connected to the internet, or you can do a manual update from the settings menu. The soundbar is also a full Roku player and speaker, which means you won't have to waste valuable entertainment center space on a single-purpose wireless receiver.įrom there, you need to update firmware - but the Roku OS takes care of most of this for you. The speakers and subwoofer connect to the soundbar wirelessly, so cable management is blessedly minimal. If you're using a subwoofer, you also plug that in and position it. You then position the two speakers somewhere behind your couch, and plug each one into a power source. You start by hooking the soundbar up to your TV, which requires an HDMI cord and a power cable.

Both INTC and TSLA are limited by how quickly they can ramp up production capacity to meet demand. But, Tesla does not face a shortage of demand for its vehicles. Certainly, the market dominance of Tesla vehicles has eliminated an incentive for Tesla to add certain features that consumers want, such as heads-up displays (HUD) and digital rear-view mirrors. Returning to the INTC and TSLA example, both stocks are affected by demand for their products exceeding supply, but there is no reason to expect INTC to outperform TSLA. Selling an investment that is expected to increase in value to buy one that is expected to decrease in value is a recipe for losing money. Interest rates and bond prices usually move in opposite directions. You should sell an investment when your reasons for buying the investment are no longer valid, not because the investment is performing as expected.įor example, selling stocks now to buy bonds is problematic because bonds are likely to decrease in value when the Federal Reserve Board increases interest rates. The decision to rebalance should be forward-looking, based on expectations about where the stock and bond markets will head in the future. Rebalancing also conflicts with other common strategies, such as buy-and-hold and harvesting losses to offset capital gains. Sometimes, a stock is a low performer for a reason, in which case rebalancing is unlikely to improve the results. When an investment has been demonstrating lackluster performance, there is no reason to expect that it won’t continue to demonstrate poor performance. It also assumes that low-performing investments are hidden gems that will increase in value, without any evidence to support the assumption. Rebalancing assumes that stocks are more likely to decrease in value when their value has increased, which is not necessarily true. It is a pessimistic form of market timing, which is often less effective than remaining invested. Rebalancing is just as guilty of basing investment decisions on past performance as momentum plays, whether the rebalancing occurs on a schedule or upon a specified level of divergence from the target asset allocation. It argues that rebalancing the portfolio is necessary to protect it from a decrease in value.īut, past performance does not predict future results. In the case of TSLA stock, it assumes that the investment will drop in value because it has come so far so fast. Rebalancing is an uninformed strategy that assumes that high-flying investments have nowhere to go but down or, at best, have no room for further growth. The portfolio is worth more than the $81,800 the portfolio was worth back in April, but not as much as it might have been worth without rebalancing. If you had rebalanced your portfolio on April 1, 2021, your portfolio would be worth $98,899 on November 1, 2021, about a fifth less than the $124,300 it would have been worth if you hadn’t rebalanced. Disadvantages of Rebalancingīut, why would you sell investments that are doing well to buy investments that aren’t doing well?Ĭontinuing the previous example, by November 1, 2021, TSLA stock had risen to $1,145 a share and INTC stock had dropped to about $49 a share. Implementing an investment glide path requires rebalancing the portfolio periodically. It reduces the risk mix of the portfolio as retirement age approaches. An example of a linear glide path is the old rule of thumb that the percentage invested in stocks should be 100 minus your age. These investment glide paths reduce the risk mix of a portfolio as the target date approaches. Rebalancing is also a natural consequence of investment glide paths that change the asset allocation over time, such as target date funds. You do history and current affairs and sports and arts and biography ? I think they thought I was incompetent. When I explained this to American publishers, they didn’t think I was specialized. We’re almost entirely invested in researched nonfiction. Sutherland House is fairly specialized for a Canadian independent. I met a woman who only publishes books for military families, a man who published books that interpret Japanese culture for Americans, a woman who publishes almost entirely black female authors, a man who publishes a series of short books each explaining a different piece of software.Įach of the publishers had a deep understanding of his or her narrow audience and knew how to reach it. Rather, I heard a lot of talk from the publishers in attendance about the need to find an addressable commercial niche. Government support for book publishing in the US is rare and over four days, I didn’t run across a single publisher at the Independent Book Publishers Association conference who specialized in literary fiction or poetry. Not surprisingly, the individual businesses within the sector are also weak. The inclinations of our publishers toward literary fiction combined with the Canada Council’s disincentives to commercial publishing have helped produce a Canadian independent publishing sector weak on commercial fiction, commercial nonfiction, and researched nonfiction. As we’ve discussed here before, the Canada Council tends to frown upon history, biography, science writing, journalism, etc., which sell more reliably than literary fiction but less so than commercial fiction and nonfiction. Nor are most forms of serious, researched nonfiction. These genres aren’t supported by the Canada Council, however. Also commercial nonfiction-how-to’s, self help, and cookbooks. What sells? Nothing is guaranteed but commercial fiction-fantasy, mystery, romance, etc.-in relatively reliable. The odd book will break out-a precious few will be hugely successful-but the vast majority of titles struggle to sell a few hundred copies. No surprise, then, that of the 100 or so English Canadian independents, roughly half specialize in literary fiction and poetry, and maybe another quarter is strong in those genres while also doing other things.Īs a rule, literary fiction doesn’t sell. It allows publishers more scope to follow their inclinations. Nothing wrong with that-it’s a lifestyle choice.įortunately for them, the Canada Council, which is often writing the biggest cheques, favours literary fiction and poetry. They’re as commercial as they need to be to keep doing what they like. It means more to them to win a Giller or a Griffin prize than to build a commercially successful business. Most of the Canadian independents I’ve met are primarily interested in literary fiction and poetry. Publishers tend to produce books that reflect the kind of books they like and the kind of books that governments fund. Inevitably, the availability of public money shapes the Canadian publishing environment. If these grants were to disappear tomorrow, all but a few of our independents would either be out of business or circling the drain within a year or two. An Ontario tax credit, for instance, will cover up to 30 percent of an eligible publisher’s non-printing expenses. Ontario, BC, and Quebec have additional grants programs of their own. The two major federal grants programs are the Canada Council for the Arts (sends cheques for up to $250,000 annually to eligible publishers) and the Canada Book Fund (sends cheques for amounts equivalent to between 10 and 15 percent of an eligible publisher’s sales). Most find it a struggle to break even with the grants. I don’t know of a single Canadian publisher who wouldn’t be underwater without grants. In my experience, between 20 percent and 60 percent of revenue for the roughly 100 independent publishers this side of the border comes in the form of grants. I attended an annual conference of the Independent Book Publishers Association in San Diego a couple of weeks ago, in part because I was curious to see how US publishers manage without generous federal and provincial grants. Small groups of men were uncovering each of the lifeboats at random, and tossing in lanterns and tins of biscuits, but the crowds were still holding back as crewmen moved to the davits and began turning the cranks that swung the lifeboats out and then lowered them to where they could be boarded by the extremely hesitant group that stood and watched them. Tonally, “Resident Evil 4” (2023) hits the reset button. This tone was created by a bright color palette, goofy dialogue from the main characters and horror set pieces expressed through gameplay. I knew I was going to enjoy it, but I didn’t know how much.įor me, the defining aspect of the original game was its tone. Going into this remake, I still had that introduction sequence in mind, but otherwise had a completely blank slate as I never played the rest of the game. Even if you love “Resident Evil 2” or “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” and it was your favorite game, you don’t love it as much as someone who loves “Resident Evil 4.” This game radiates love and enthusiasm no other game in the series does. “Resident Evil 4” (2005) wasn’t just the best “Resident Evil” game, it was one of the best games ever made. Online opinions and discussions with some friends show how people feel about this game. He is a very simple character, but a strong and well-written protagonist. The tone, atmosphere and goofy one-liners stuck with me compared to aspects from the other games I have played. Since then, I have played “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” and “Resident Evil Village.” Both of these games were great and revived the franchise, but nothing cemented itself in my brain like the introduction sequence from “Resident Evil 4” (2005). I played the intro sequence to “Resident Evil 4” (2005) at a friend’s house way back in elementary school. My experience with the “Resident Evil” franchise is relatively new. While the mission progresses, the scale of the cult’s operation grows as the player fights villagers, cultists and soldiers infected by mind-controlling parasites. Ashley has been kidnapped by a religious cult in rural Spain. Kennedy, who is on a mission to rescue the United States’ president’s daughter, Ashley Graham. Developed and published by Capcom, players control special agent Leon S. “Resident Evil 4” (2023), released March 23, is the remake of the survival horror classic “Resident Evil 4” (2005). However, no other game in the franchise is as loved and cherished as “Resident Evil 4.” All of these games have been an evolution of the franchise and staples in the survival-horror genre. During that span, the franchise released a lot of notable games, such as “Resident Evil 2” in 1998, “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis” in 1999 and “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” in 2017. With 30 games released since 1996, “Resident Evil” has come a long way. “Resident Evil” has the weirdest and most complex history of any video game franchise. "Super Hot Meets Trucks?
